WILLIAM COOPERMAN, AIA, LEED AP

Bill Cooperman’s professional career spans more than 25 years and is comprised of design, management and construction experience in a range of project types including civic and higher education buildings, academic libraries, sound editing theaters and studios, photo labs, retail, dining, and health facilities, and single and multi-family residences. He has proven expertise in new construction, renovation and adaptive reuse projects, including conservation of historic structures. Joining the office in 2002, Bill was initially one of the project team that managed design and construction of the $130-million UCLA Northwest Campus Housing project. He since has had a leading role in the UCLA residence hall renovation projects, with focus on the modernization of building envelopes for three 50-year-old campus residential buildings. Bill was one of the lead architects on the Santa Clara University's high tech Harrington Learning Commons, Sobrato Technology Center, and Orradre Library, from construction documents through completion of construction and move-in. He is currently one of the project architects on the three-phase $280-million UCLA Campus Housing Infill project, scheduled to begin construction in early 2010. Bill’s work demonstrates his ability to coordinate large, complex phased projects, and work with large consultant teams and multiple contractors. He is equally adept with smaller projects. In all cases, Bill seeks in architecture a unity of purpose, organization, form, material, scale and detail. Enjoying the collaborative nature of his work, Bill values team interaction and the opportunities it affords to share knowledge and experience with the ultimate goal of design optimization. Bill engages other design professionals, product representatives and builders in a process that leads consistently to cost effective, energy efficient designs of remarkably good quality. A LEED Accredited Professional, Bill is actively engaged with other office leaders in guiding and developing our sustainable design initiative. His other professional distinctions include certification in each of the Construction Specifications Institute’s CDT, CCA, and CCS programs. Bill received his education at the University of California Santa Cruz and Berkeley, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Environmental Design. He continued his professional architectural education at the University of California, Los Angeles Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning, studying with Robert Mangurian, Charles Moore, and George Stiny. An educator himself, Bill has taught several architectural design courses over the years, including an interior design studio with University of California Irvine Extension and studio courses at Otis Parsons School of Design in their Environmental Arts program.
